In the U.S. there is a large market for used equipment. The reason being that most new stuff is CNC and very expensive. We have a large Mazak CNC lathe at work that cost almost $250,000 new. Most used equipment keeps its valve however. My lathe cost $950 and I invested about another $200 rebuilding, buying tooling, and other accessories. It is 228 x 1220mm. My next lathe will be much larger. I would like a 381 x 1270mm Colchester. Colchester lathes from the 1980s that are in good condition sell for about $8500. I buy most of my used equipment from http://www.industrialmachinery.com/store/ They are not very far from my house.

I like the Volvo Sugga, but they are very rare and expensive. The Redbull one doesn't retain much Volvo and it was built on a GMC chassis. Here are a few nice ones in your price range:

About lathe, the marked of used very little in Norway. So it will probably by a new one.
but i also checks blocket in Sweden.
To heavy to ship from USA I think?

The lathes that you listed look fairly good for the price. This one is best: http://www.gasolin.no/index.php?main_pa ... cts_id=693 It has higher speed and a larger 25mm spindle. My best suggestion is looking at it in person. Test the feel of the components. These lathes are not expensive for something new. Are they made in China? Stuff like this can last, if it is taken care of, but sometimes the components can wear out sooner. That is why I went with an older lathe. This stuff does look like quality.

It is really up to you what you choose. I am completely satisfied with mine. I try to avoid chinese stuff and very few of my tools are made in china. A 225mm chuck is sufficient; the chuck size depends on the swing of the lathe. I get a larger lathe just to do brakes, flywheels and larger parts. Most of my parts are small and short, but I have also threaded a 1m rod before.

Last point to pay attention to: most of these lathes thread in either metric or standard. Mine does only standard. You need other gears to change it around. Volvo uses standard threads and there is a lot of metric stuff. Just take that into account. I am not sure how much threading you would do, but it is nice sometimes. Acme threads are really nice.

Also, these lathes don't turn fast enough for carbide cutting tools. You can use them, but the finish is not very good. I use HSS. You can buy pre-ground ones or grind your own. HSS insert is really nice. These are a little expensive, but I am buying some soon. Quality cutting tools make all the difference. http://www.arwarnerco.com/c-5-tool-kits.aspx

Interesting! I also like HSS, I seems to remember that the cut vas exielent, rather than hardmetal? But mutch has may be happen since I do al lot of thing in lathe..
It should be good to make drums, but this means a bigger lathe I think?
I think hlyshaugs lifters is make by hardmetal and vas very bad for an nice isky-cam!

I have nerver seen worse surface in some engine! Baaaaaaad!
If We had time we should go back and ask them some qouestions? Ant take a fight? But sine we are primary "peacefull" we did not do that, and/also since you had some good ones to hlyshaug.

They set the feed rate too fasting and took too deep of a cut at one pass. That is rookie's work. Those could be cleaned up, but maybe have to remove .5mm. I would try the slowest feed rate of 0.05mm/revolution. An even better option is finding a grinder that can mount on the cross-feed.
