First of all, a nice old lathe can be purchased that works just as well or better than a new one. Mine is a South Bend from '46. I will upgrade at some point to a Colchester lathe and is much larger.
I know that you were measuring compression ratio, but over here, the best suggestion is to deck the block and have a clearance of 0.81-0.88mm between the top of the piston and the head. Even-though it is a tighter gap, it produces less detonation with a high compression than a lower one.
Lastly, in the U.S. there are so many cars that I don't pay attention to much older american ones. My favorite truck is International. You can search ebay.com for Dodge Power Wagon and see the results for yourself.
I really just like all older Volvo stuff the most. By the way, you have seen this video right?

Lastly look up Volvo Viking Trucks.
Nice old lathe you have there! I think the stiffness is very good. There is av interesting Colchester on sale here in Norway to an nice prise new: 13 000 kroner. May be I´ll go for this:

The gap has to be there becasue of the aluminium expansion. But may be this is importent? But how? I did not understand? Maybe you can explain it further?
Another thing is that the piston normaly is about 0,1 mm under the block. Normaly some of us dont measure that, because this is a good extra to conmpensate for carbon...(buildup).
Du you have an experiense og 123 ignition. I am not sure avbout the vakuum? Im not sure that is has av vakuumregulation?
About cars: May be you like this?
Well I will take a look to a International. I was driving one for many years ago.. There is only a few of them in Norway left, may be under twenty?
Funny tractor by the way....
